Ancient Adullam

“David escaped to the cave of Adullam.”

1 Samuel 22:1

The story behind the name

A refuge that became a place of formation.

Adullam was an ancient town in the foothills of Judah, surrounded by natural caves. When David fled from King Saul, he found refuge there. His family and about four hundred people gathered around him—an unlikely community formed in a difficult season.

The place appears throughout Scripture: in the story of Judah and Tamar, among the cities conquered by Joshua, and later among the fortified cities of Judah. Yet the cave remains its defining image: protection, preparation, and people gathering in hope.

Genesis 38Joshua 12:151 Samuel 22:1–22 Chronicles 11:5–7
